A teenager died and another is battling for life at Bhabha Hospital in Bandra after the bike they were on skidded and crashed into a barrier at Reclamation.
Afaq Sheikh (19), a management student, lived in Shivaji Nagar, Govandi, with his family. A friend, Danish, and he left home on Thursday night along with 12 other friends for jiyarat, a visit to the Mahim dargah. “They were 12 boys on six bikes,” said a police officer from Bandra Police station. “They visited the dargah and then decided to take a ride on the Bandra Reclamation stretch. When they left Mahim, they crossed the 100km/hr mark in no time and at the sharp U-turn at Reclamation, Danish lost control of the bike, which skidded and crashed into a barrier. Afaq was thrown into the air and died of injuries to the head, the cop said. Danish, too, sustained head injuries and his skull has been fractured.
Their friends immediately brought the two to Bhabha hospital, where Afaq was declared dead on arrival. “Danish had a convulsion when he was brought in. We suspect blood clots in his brain. His condition is extremely critical,” said a casualty medical officer.
Afaq's parents are in Fatehpur, Madhya Pradesh, as Afaq’s grandfather had passed away. “His parents have started their return journey and should be here today. We haven’t told them yet about Afaq’s death. When Afaq had called his parents and requested permission for the Jiyarat, he was allowed on condition that he returns as early as possible,” said Shekeel Ahmed Khan, Afaq’s maternal uncle. “When Afaq was leaving home, his younger brother insisted on accompanying him. But, Afaq refused to allow him to come,” Khan said.
Afaq and Danish were studying management at Narayan Guru College, Chembur.
