Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST) officials in an official statement said that one of Tata Power's cables had burnt, causing a fire at a transformer in the Backbay substation.
O P Gupta, general manager of BEST, said, "The power supply has been affected since morning and we had to go without electricity for 12 hours."

The effect of the incident was so strong that it left homes, shops and other establishments sweating it out.

Pervin Daruwalla, a Colaba resident vented her anger and said, "From the time I have got up in the morning there was no electricity at our place. I tried calling the BEST office several times but didn't receive a proper response." And it wasn't just the heat that annoyed the residents.

Many of them were forced to remain in their homes as they battled the electricity outage. Lamenting their situation, Reshma Daryanani from Cuffe Parade, said, "We feel like prisoners in our own homes. The lifts in our building don't work owing to the outage and it is not easy to walk down 14 floors. I have a pregnant daughter at home and this is making it even more difficult for her."

Sociology professor Nandini Sardesai, a Colaba resident, added, "It has been terrible since morning without any electricity. I heard that the patrons who went to watch a movie in the area were also refunded."

And while residents baked in the heat, officials tried their level best to restore power to the affected areas.

Sources said that there isn't a proper feeder system to supply electricity from other sources at Colaba and Navy Nagar and BEST had to resort to diesel generators for part restoration of supply.

An official from the BEST control room added that they were working with officials from Tata Power and were hoping the supply would be restored would be done by 10.30 pm.
