BMC asks Taj Mahal Hotel to pay Rs 5.5 crore road charges for use of public space

The Taj Mahal Palace and Tower Hotel will have to pay Rs 5.5 crore as dues to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for putting up flower pots, flower beds and barricades in the adjoining public space and blocking pedestrian movement.

The BMC had slapped the road charges on the hotel management for occupying the road adjacent to it in Colaba. The civic body has also asked the hotel to make footpaths available for pedestrian movement.

A letter sent by 'A' ward officals to the hotel on June 18 states that the hotel should pay the amount to the BMC within 15 days, failing which the BMC would clear the encroachments without further notice.

This is not the first time the BMC has fined the hotel for use of public space on the Colaba road.
