The success of escalators attached to skywalks at Jogeshwari West and Kurla West will determine whether other skywalks, constructed at a cost ot Rs 800 crore in the city and suburbs, will get them. These skywalks were handed over to the BMC by the MMRDA as the latter was unable to maintain them.

Pilot play
While presenting the BMC Budget for 2018-19, Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta said, “The skywalks that are being constructed at Jogeshwari station and at Buddha Colony in Kurla West will get escalators. If this pilot is successful, we will instal escalators at other skywalks and foot overbridges (FOBs), wherever possible. The BMC is also checking the possibility of installing escalators at the FOB at Marine Lines.”

mid-day had conducted an audit of skywalks in Mumbai and Mumbai Metropolitan Region, highlighting their sorry state. In the BMC Budget for 2018-19, a provision of R578.09 crore has been made, which will be used for many important works, including escalators.

Other projects
The BMC has also speeded up the work of important road infrastructure projects in Mumbai, which includes 24 bridges that are coming up at a cost of Rs 825.58 crore. Some of the important bridges that will be taken up include the construction of a flyover on Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road at a cost of Rs 467.68 crore, an approach bridge towards the flyover near Nahur railway station at a cost of Rs 72.30 crore, and construction of a bridge over Mithi river near Kurla at a cost of Rs 72.30 crore.
