Boy kills girlfriend, attempts suicide

A 26-year-old call centre employee was allegedly stabbed to death by her boyfriend at Mira Road in the neighbouring Thane district today after the duo had a fight over her stolen ATM card, police said.

Later the accused stabbed himself. "However, he is currently recuperating in the hospital," police said.

"The deceased, identified as Pauloma Fernandes, who had been staying alone in a rented house in Rashmi Hetal co-operative society in Baverli Park, was allegedly attacked by her boyfriend Aquino Martis, 22, with a sharp knife at around 4 am when she returned from office," Mustak Shaikh, sub-inspector of Mira Road police station, told PTI.

According to police, Pauloma, who had come from Goa to Mumbai six months ago, was working in a call centre in suburban Malad. "The accused Aquino had also worked in a call centre earlier.

They came to know each other and were having an affair for the last couple of months," police said. "Aquino, who left his job, learnt that his girlfriend has huge deposits in her account.

Pauloma lost her ATM card recently and she suspected that Aquino might have stolen the card," the officer said, adding, "this led to heated arguments between them."

"Enraged Aquino, holding a sharp weapon, hid near the staircase, waiting for his girlfriend to come," police said.

"Pauloma reached her building main gate at around 4 am and asked the watchman to escort her to the building," police said, adding, "soon after she reached there, the accused jumped on her and stabbed her."

The accused had bitten the watchman when he tried to catch him and subsequently tried to kill self, police said.
