After a Samajwadi Party (SP) legislator from Uttar Pradesh was arrested for allegedly running a prostitution racket in Goa, police officials from Kondhwa police station have arrested two people including a secretary from the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) for allegedly robbing a 33-year-old city-based labour contractor to the tune of Rs 8.95 lakh cash.

The two arrested have been identified as Devsingh Balmiki alias Ramkumar Yadav (45), who is a BSP member from Kalyanpur constituency in Kanpur and Gaurav Balmiki (21), who is a resident of Kanpur.

Police officials said the two suspects had come to the city looking for a job as labourers and were employed by the complainant, Sachin Kadam, a resident of Sukhsagar Nagar. According to the officials, the two arrested knew that Kadam was in possession of hefty cash in his bag and thus the two hatched a plan to drug him before running away with the cash.

The two had worked for Kadam earlier and Kadam contacted them again in August, as he required some assistance at a building site in Talegaon. Kadam even asked them to bring along three more people to help out and arranged for their accommodation. “In the month of August, five people including the two arrested came to Pune and Kadam arranged for their accommodation and took a small room on rent in the city,” said assistant police inspector, Sunil Thopate of the Kondhwa police station.

The two accused were aware of the fact that Kadam used to carry a lot of cash with him to distribute amongst the labourers. On the day of the incident, he had close to Rs 9 lakh cash on him. u00a0Cops went to Uttar Pradesh and managed to nab the two suspects on Sunday and brought them back to city. They, however, have not been able to recover any money from them yet. “We are still hunting for the three other accused including a woman,” Thopate informed.u00a0
