He is the man responsible for the death of 66 people and maiming many others for life. MiD DAY finds out more about Amritpal Singh Sachdeva

He has served time in Tihar Jail and has had numerous brushes with the law over the years. Amritpal Singh Sachdeva, the owner of building no. N-85 at Lalita Park, is a man with a chequered past.

Sachdeva is allegedly involved in 24 criminal cases in Delhi and NCR area. A senior police officer said that he was booked in connection with a case of attempt to murder in Ghaziabad. Apart from that he has been booked under the arms act, excise act and has also faced allegations of land grabbing. The officer said that his brother Satnam also has a criminal background. In a few cases the brothers were booked together.

Sachdeva has more than 17 criminal cases registered against him at the Shakarpur police station in east Delhi.u00a0 A senior police official said that some cases that were filed against him were of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. He was declared a bad character of the area around six year ago by Shakarpur police.
Three cases against him are pending with the Ghaziabad police. But Sachdeva has more or less managed to escape punishment.

By all accounts, Sachdeva is the quintessential family man. His only son reportedly lives in the US where he is pursuing some professional courses. He has three daughters, all married and living in the Capital. His fourth daughter passed away around two years ago. Neighbours say that they knew about Sachdeva's criminal background but he never had any arguments with them. None of his family members were available for comments.


Eyewitnees

Sources said that Sachdeva was sitting outside the building when the incident took place on Tuesday night. He himself saw the building come crashing down. Locals say he used to sit outside the building everyday during the evening hours on a chair in a nearby park. He reportedly didn't like to show off and would roam around on a red scooty.



Team work

Eight teams of senior police official were formed by the east Delhi police to nab Amritpal Singh Sachdeva. Police apprehended him from Geeta Colony area after tracing his call details. Police personnel had launched an extensive search to nab Sachdeva, who was on the run after the incident.
A senior police officer said that seeing the gravity of the incident eight teams of senior police official were formed to oversee the incident. Each team was doing separate work. Few teams were pressed into service to get the post-mortem of the deceased conducted while other teams were formed to take the statement of the injured persons.
"We located him with the help of his phone call. A raid was conducted and he was apprehended. Now he is in police custody," said a senior police official.
The police filed a case under section 304 (culpable homicide any not amounting to murder) against Sachdeva.
