Gender equality should be fought for every day, Sophie Gregoire Trudeau, wife of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, told students at Sophia college during her visit to the institution last morning. She asked the women to unite in order to abolish inequality from the society, besides telling them about the measures taken by the Canadian government for the same.

Sophie, who has studied media, is now a public speaker, known to work for social equality and women's empowerment. Her 15-minute speech on the subject saw a packed auditorium, with some students jostling near the entrance to get a good spot. She also answered students' questions, gently correcting anyone who called her "ma'am" with "Call me Sophie".

Answering a question on the measures taken by the Canadian government in this regard, she said it was coming up with the Feminist International Assistance Policy, which is their government's way of empowering the women in Canada and advancing gender equality for effective growth of girls and women there. "My husband and I have welcomed many new people in our country. A lot of our government's decisions are to ensure gender equality; pay equity too is on the agenda. The process has begun..." she said.

When a student asked her about difficulties in getting admission for higher education in Canada, she replied, "There are many Indians who have come to Canada for studies. If you too have plans to come, welcome home." The rest of the day, after the college session, was a private affair for Sophie, as PM Trudeau was engaged in an Indo-Canadian Business Chamber meeting in a posh South Mumbai's hotel.
