This new delivery joint in Santacruz east promises affordable pizza, pasta and wraps. Don't count on quick delivery, though

When we first checked out Cantina's menu, we loved the prices. A far cry from the overpriced Dominos of the world, this seemed like a value-for-money takeaway that could feed four hungry souls without emptying their wallets.

Excited, we set about ordering two 7-inch pizzas (The Greek, Rs 70, and Spicy Paneer, Rs 80), Lemony (a mini veg meal for Rs 130), Bruschetta (Rs 70), a Paneer Tikka Wrap (Rs 70), a Mexican Chicken Wrap (Rs 80), a Veg Club Sandwich (Rs 65) and a Chicken Alfredo Pasta (Rs 115).

Things didn't start on a good note, with us getting into an argument with the guy taking our order over the phone.

Khar (W) was too far from Santacruz (E) to manage the 45-minute delivery time stated on the menu, he argued, and insisted on an hour for delivery.

Two calls and an hour and 15 minutes later, when the food finally arrived, we were more than a tad disappointed with the soggy bruschetta and wraps that had ketchup all over them. Thankfully, both pizzas, made on a thin crust at our request, made up for that.

The Greek had a generous sprinkling of olives and was tangy, while the Spicy Paneer pleased our taste buds adequately.

Both wraps, though, were a major letdown. While the Mexican chicken was too tangy, the paneer wrap had a distinctly stale, uncooked flavour to it, compounded by the addition of too many oiled veggies.

The Chicken Alfredo Pasta could have done with more herbs and slightly better cooked chicken. And the less said about the club sandwich, the better.

It was bland and entirely forgettable. We've had better sandwiches at the roadside thelas outside our office.

The bruschetta, though, had potential. If it hadn't been for the delay in delivery, we're sure the generous cheese, tomato and olive combination would have tasted far better on a crunchy toasty base, instead of the soggy mess it had ultimately become.

Lemony wasn't as lemony as we thought but the mashed potatoes and the veggies on the side made up for that. On the whole, a light, easy choice.

A word of caution about the portions. When Cantina says affordable, it certainly means it.

The bruschettas came to us as eight large pieces, the pizzas were a large four slices each, the pasta was good enough for two people, and there were two wraps in each order. Generous? Very.

Expect a decent meal fit for a football match on TV, accompanied with some beer, that won't rip into your bank account. Don't expect timely delivery, though, or you'll be left chewing your fingernails.
