With the season of Lent beginning for Christians across the city on Wednesday, Oswald Cardinal Gracias has appealed to parishioners to make God the centre of their life in order to usher in 'a springtime of hope' especially in times of economic recession.

Cardinal Gracias agreed upon the theme during a recent conference of the Catholic Bishop's Conference of India.

Fr Anthony Charanghat, spokesperson for the Archdiocese of Bombay, said that the Cardinal hoped that the message would be especially important for believers given the current times of strife.

Holy Name Cathedral alone is expected to see over 2,500 parishioners attend the afternoon Ash Wednesday mass.

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of a 40-day long season of fasting and prayer that ends with Easter Sunday.
