The mystery surrounding the demise of a senior citizen has been cleared after cops received the post-mortem reports, which stated that the victim had died owing to suffocation and strangulation. On Sunday, 62-year-old Pratima Chavan was found dead in her apartment at Ashtavinayak building in Tilak Nagar. Chavan lived alone, after her husband died 10 years back owing to a heart attack, and one son had committed suicide three years ago and the other died in a train accident.

An officer from Tilak Nagar said that her daughter-in-law Suvarna, who lived with her mother in Bhandup, but would often visit Chavan, found her body. According to Suvarna’s statement, she had visited Chavan’s home around 5.30 pm on Sunday. At first, she rang the doorbell repeatedly but no one answered. After waiting, Suvarna on a second glance noticed that the door was locked from outside. She opened the door and went in to find her mother-in-law on the bed.

“At first, she thought Chavan was sleeping but when she didn’t move, she realised Chavan had died and informed the neighbours and the police,” said an official from Tilak Nagar police station, adding that Chavan’s body was taken to Rajawadi Hospital where she was declared dead. The Tilak Nagar police initially, reported the case as an accidental death but suspected foul play.

However, after receiving the reports of the post-mortem on Monday night, they filed a case of murder. “Looking at her body, we had noticed some marks on her neck, which raised some doubts. But without any confirmation, we had to file an Accidental Death Report (ADR). However, we now have the post-mortem results, which confirm that it was a murder,” said an officer.

The Tilak Nagar police have booked the unidentified accused under section 302 (murder) and 452 (house-trespass alter preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful) of the Indian Penal Code. They suspect that Chavan was murdered over property, as she owned two apartments in Bandra and Kurla and are now investigating further.u00a0
