The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is against returning actor Sooraj Pancholi his passport that was seized in the connection with the death of actor Jiah Khan.

Pancholi had asked the Bombay High Court for his passport on Tuesday as he wants to travel to Dubai for a 10-day event and the case will likely be heard today.

The passport was seized by the agency in July 2013 when the actor was granted bail by the HC. CBI is reluctant to give it since Jiah was a foreign national and Pancholi can influence people related to the case if he travels abroad. Also, CBI counsel Hiten Vinegaonkar told Justice Mrudula Bhatkar of Bombay High Court that Sooraj had not mentioned in writing where he wants to travel and why.

Though the CBI had asked for two weeks to reply the court asked them to respond by Thursday and also observed that since the crime happened in the country why should Sooraj not get his passport back.

However, Bhatkar did not allow Jiah’s mother Rabiya Khan’s lawyer to interfere in the matter. Also, the HC has stopped the trial in the case after Rabiya highlighted several anomalies in the CBI investigation and the
CBI opposed Dinesh Tiwari’s appointment as public prosecutor.
