Gautam Patole's exhibition 'Charcoal Delights' will be on in Nehru Art Gallery from April 20-26. This photo-journalist turned artist is also the founder of Art Desh, a website for upcoming artists. Patole gets chatty about art:
Snap up
I enjoyed the challenges of a photo-journalist. However, seeing that human interest stories have lost space in papers disheartened me. I used to indulge in art in-between my assignments; it was largely for personal pleasure. But I had the urge to turn into an artist deep within me. Then once, I gifted a charcoal painting to the late Janet Fine, an American who used to write in papers and also used to promote art. In 2006, she held an art camp where I got a chance to display my ceramic art on tiles. In 2007, I started making charcoal works for D j vu, a new art gallery. That was the beginning of my journey.u00a0
Black and white
In these days of colour, black and white is rare. Charcoal is a challenging medium and very few artists manage it. I am happy to tell that I have done every subject in charcoal, from landscapes to wildlife. My first painting to be auctioned was a wildlife one of two elephants. And at the same auction, Pooja Bedi bought a nude painting.u00a0u00a0
Dream as an artist
Art should be appreciated for itself and not for its signature. We need to generate another level of art lovers and art buyers. It's ironical that works of art get auctioned regularly for all causes other than for the cause of artists themselves. I wish that an organisation called AID -- Artists In Distress is formed to support all needy artists. There is also need of a regular art magazine, which will be devoted to art reviewing and which will be the guiding force to art lovers too.u00a0u00a0
