Church vandalised in New Panvel

Three masked men threw stones at the St George Church in Navi Mumbai and fled from the spot. The incident took place around 1.30 am on Saturday

The Khandeshwar police have registered a case after three unidentified accused arrived at St George Church in New Panvel and threw stones inside the Church. According to the police officials, the incident took place around 1.30 am on Saturday. After throwing stones on the statue of St George, the three fled from the spot.

An officer from Khandeshwar police station, on condition of anonymity said, “The three accused arrived on a bike with masks covering their faces. They started pelting stones on the statue of St George after which they fled from the spot. The stones broke the glass case that covered the statue.”


The security guards stationed near the Church followed the accused and tried to catch hold of them. However, the trio managed to escape.

Senior police inspector Jannardhan Thorat from Khandeshwar police station said, “We have registered the case under Sections 295 (injuring or defiling place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class) and 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code. We have obtained CCTV footage of the incident and are trying to nab the
culprits.”
