Just a day after a massive fire gutted the Cinevista Studio at Kanjurmarg, the fire department of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) issued a notice to the studio owners, as it does not have the basic firefighting system in place. Fire officials are of the opinion that the existing firefighting equipment was not working at the time of the mishap and the studio owners never provided the fire department with the mandatory form B, which helps in certifying the system.

According to sources, this was the fourth fire reported in the city within a span of eight days and the latest victim Gopi Suresh Verma, who worked as a technician at the studio, has taken the death toll to 15. The blaze at the studio destroyed the wires and installations, instruments, doors, windows, planks and other materials.

Sources said the notice served to the studio owners would affect shootings lined up in the coming days, as the studio will only be allowed to operate after it instals the required equipment. The fire department has also stopped the studio’s electricity supply as a precautionary measure.

Even though, initially, it was believed that a short circuit led to the fire, the exact reason behind it is yet to be known as the investigation is still on. R A Choudhary, deputy chief fire officer, said, “The cause is yet to be ascertained. We have issued a notice to the owners under section 6 of the Fire Act, as the studio lacked the required firefighting system.”
