Beware of parking your vehicle in a no-parking zone.

Since June 11, the traffic police have been on the prowl, armed with wheel clamps to make illegally-parked vehicles immobile.

For this, they have procured 1,800 wheel clamps.

A special drive has been initiated to check illegal and unauthorised parking of vehicles in no-parking zones.

"With the availability of additional clamps, we have managed to immobilise more vehicles," said Nandkumar Chaugule, deputy police commissioner (City), traffic. "On the first day of the drive itself, we managed to clamp 508 vehicles. Formerly, the daily average was around 150."

Between January and May this year, the traffic police had clamped 29,236 vehicles.

The vehicles were de-clamped after owners paid up the penalty of Rs 100.

Officials said the drive assumes significance considering the unauthorised parking at crowded places across the city.

"Clamping a vehicle is easier and less expensive than towing it away. Besides, towing requires additional manpower," said a senior traffic official. "Many vehicle owners complaint about their vehicle getting damaged during the towing process. This is eliminated in case of clamping."

508, the average number of vehicles made immobile daily after the drive to clamp illegally parked vehicles was launched. Earlier, the number stood at 150

At owner's risk
When a vehicle is parked in a no parking zone and clamped, a notice is slapped on the  window. The notice reads:  'This vehicle has been  clamped for unauthorised parking. Do not move the vehicle as moving it without removing the clamp will puncture the tyre and   cause other damage for  which the owner is solely responsible.'
