Mahanagar Gas Ltd has hiked the price of compressed natural gas (CNG) used by vehicles by 2.57 per cent, an official said yesterday.

The hike comes into effect from midnight of Wednesday. The price hike will lead to an increase of 85 paise per kg in Mumbai and now it will cost Rs 33.95 per kg.

It will affect around 2.60 lakh vehicle owners from midnight of Wednesday-Thursday.

However, there is no hike in the prices of piped natural gas (PNG) used for cooking by around 6,00,000 customers in and around Mumbai.

After the hike, the price of CNG will be: Mumbai-Rs 33.95 per kg, Thane-Rs 34.12, Mira-Bhayander-Rs 34.37, Navi Mumbai-Kharghar-Rs 34.29 and Bhiwandi-Rs 34.97.

Justifying the hike, the MGL said that despite the increase, CNG remains 69 per cent and 42 per cent cheaper as compared to petrol and diesel, respectively.
