Two friends one a management student and the other pursuing BCom who thought some liquid courage was in order prior to their exams today, were apprehended by excise officials in Sion with imported liquor worth over Rs 1 lakh on Saturday night. They were produced in court and have been remanded in police custody. The duo told police that they had purchased the consignment for a group of friends who were to gather at a designated place to prepare for the exams.

Ojaswi Sharma, a student of Master of Management Studies at Lala Lajpatrai Institute of Management, and Sumit Behal of SIES college, who’s in third year of BCom, decided to party and study with friends on Saturday night, but state excise officials got a tip-off about their plan. The duo was caught while carrying liquor near Modern Café in Sion. Eighteen bottles of Black Label Scotch worth Rs 81,000 and eight bottles of Red Label Scotch valued at Rs 32,000 were recovered.

When the youth were produced in court, their lawyers argued that they be granted bail, but the court sent them in police remand, while allowing permission for the duo to appear in the exams. “We will take Sharma to Lala Lajpatrai Institute of Management, Haji Ali and Behal to SIES college, Sion for their tests. They had procured a large quantity of liquor. Though they are claiming the consignment was meant for a party, we need to investigate it,” said an excise official.
