A popular couplet -- maanaa ke paisa khuda toh nahni, lekin khuda se kum bhi to nahin -- used by a Congress office bearer to illustrate the importance of money, changed the tone of the party's executive meeting yesterday.

The remark was a veiled allusion to the financial constraints faced by Congress leaders, and their dependence on the richly laden coffers of the NCP.

The remark, made in a half-jest, half-serious tenor, came from an office bearer of the Marathwada region.
He was referring to the fact that the Congress -- in the event that it chooses to break its alliance with the NCP and go solo in the next elections -- may not have enough in its coffers to fund the campaign.

Financial weakness
Others too seconded his concerns about the financial weakness of the party.u00a0

Senior leaders said that in course of its three successive terms in alliance with the NCP, the latter has been footing the bills, pumping money into its local units.

Chavan humoured the remark, and addressed it by saying that he had held a round of discussions with district guardian ministers and liaison ministers to deliberate over the issue.

Costly mistake?
Another office bearer is believed to have said that parting ways with the NCP could cost it heavily, as the ally was an aggressive party with grand political ambitions, and was sure to prove a tough competitor for the Congress. "How we are going to face our ally as a competing party during the elections? They will be tough opponents," he asked.

Addressing the meeting, AICC in-charge for the state, Mohan Prakash questioned why he failed to detect any kind of motivation and zeal among party workers.

"In such times, they should be worrying about the polls, and putting in all their efforts," he quipped.
