The state home minister has initiated an inquiry against a police official of JJ Marg police station for allegedly registering a fake case of theft against a 23-year-old girl who had fled with her boyfriend from Grant Road to Uttar Pradesh.

When the UP police did not hand the girl over to the Mumbai cops since no FIR had been registered, the cop allegedly registered a fake case of theft and brought the girl to Mumbai. An inquiry has been initiated against Assistant Police Inspector Dilip Shinde for the fake case.
According to the police, the 23-year-old woman, who was employed at a store in Grant Road had gone missing on December 15. The girl's father had lodged a missing person's complaint with the JJ Marg police.
During investigations, the police learnt that the owner of the store, Noor Ali, had also gone missing and his father, Barkat Ali, had also lodged a missing person's complaint.
"Inquiries with the showroom staff revealed that the two were dating each other and were suspected to have eloped. Our investigation revealed that the couple had fled to Rampur in Uttar Pradesh where Barkat Ali's the brother stayed," said an officer from JJ Marg police station.
Despite several requests from the police, the couple did not agree to return to the city. Finally, Noor's uncle in UP brought him to the city, but kept the 23-year-old at his home.
When the cops reached UP to bring the girl back, the UP police did not hand her over, keeping in mind the surge in cases of honour killing and suicide.
It was then that the JJ Marg cops registered an FIR for theft worth Rs 5 lakh against the girl and brought her to Mumbai.
But the police did not find any cash on the girl, officials said. "We had registered the theft FIR after Noor's father registered a complaint with us, saying Rs 5 lakh had gone missing from his office where the girl worked as an accountant. But after investigations, we discovered that the girl had not stolen anything; there was no theft at Barkat Ali's office," said another officer from JJ Marg police station.
Following the incident, the girl's family approached the home minister to complain against the false FIR, after which an inquiry has been initiated against the API who filed the complaint.
"We will investigate whether a fake FIR was registered by the assistant police inspector. If found guilty, we will take suitable action against him," said a senior police officer.
