A 40-year-old jilted lover from Jharkhand was arrested on the Bombay High Court premises yesterday morning after his presence sparked police suspicion.

While the building premises are highly secured, the man was spotted roaming around and was detained by the policeman on duty. After questioning at Azad Maidan police station, the man confessed that he had set his mistress ablaze in Jharkand on December 2 after seeing her with another man. While the woman sustained serious burns to her body, her eight-year-old daughter succumbed to her injuries.

According to the police, the accused Mukesh Sevre (40) is a married man and lived with his family at Tata Nagar in Jharkhand. Chanchal Upadhay resided with her husband and eight-year-old old daughter Shruti in the same locality as Sevre. The police said Sevre had been having an extra-marital affair with Chanchal for the past few months. During investigations, Sevre revealed that in the last week of November, he spotted another man at Chanchal’s house. Infuriated by this, Sevre had heated arguments with Chanchal.

On the afternoon of December 2, Sevre poured kerosene on Upadhyay and her eight-year-old daughter while they were asleep and set them ablaze. He then escaped, leaving the two for dead. Chanchal and her daughter were taken to a local hospital, but the latter succumbed to her injuries. Following the incident, local MGM police registered a case against Sevre on charges of murder and attempt to murder.

Sevre told officers at Azad Maidan police station that fearing arrest, he first went to UP, then Kolkata and finally arrived at Kalyan.

The police said they are investigating why the accused was roaming in the Bombay High Court premises.

Azad Maidan police have informed MGM police officials in Jharkhand about Sevre’s arrest. The MGM police confirmed the incident, and a special team of police officers has been dispatched to Mumbai.u00a0
