The victim, Subramani BA, worked as an assistant at a video game centre. With the help of a mechanic, he tweaked the machines in such a way that he would win every time he played. Subramani made close to Rs 12 lakh this way.

After the gang made Subramani give out his ATM details, they gagged him, and strangulated him to death

While the management was clueless about this, Subramani's friends grew suspicious and asked him the secret. They insisted that he share the technique, but Subramani refused, so they decided to murder him.

Game plan

The gang Chandrashekhar, Prasanna, Raghavendra, Anil Kumar and Paramesh hatched a plan. Since they knew that a CCTV will capture their images, they went to Tirupathi and tonsured their heads. They also divided themselves in teams.

The team that trailed Subramani found that he always travelled with Chandra, a friend. So they asked his roommate Ravi, who was also part of the gang to help. Ravi called up Subramani on August 15, and took Chandra with him on some pretext.

When the gang found him alone, they forced Subramani in their van, while one of the accused took Subramani's motorcycle. He later parked it in Shivajinagar in hope that it would be stolen.

They later stuffed the body in a gunnysack, and dumped it in a canal in Pandavapura. They withdrew Rs 2.02 lakh from Subramani's account from many ATMs, across different cities.

In the meanwhile, Subramani's parents had filed a missing persons complaint. At the same time, the Upparpet police had received directions from the Director General of CID, instructing them to check mobile and bank account details of missing persons.

Inspector Lokeshwar, the investigating officer, said, "We initially thought that Subramani might have eloped with a girl and was withdrawing cash from across the state.

But after obtaining the CCTV footage from one of the banks, cops tracked down one accused and a detailed enquiry revealed the gruesome murder.

"We have arrested four persons," Parameshwar added. The cops have also recovered the vehicle used in the murder, and Rs 41,000 in cash.
