Think twice before you park your vehicle near Vashi railway station, as you may end up paying a heavy fine.
The Navi Mumbai Traffic Police is planning to declare some stretches near the station as no parking zones. The decision was taken keeping in mind the increasing number of traffic jams that are creating chaos near the station area, especially during peak hours.
Keeping public interest in mind, the cops had put forth the proposal before locals on October 25. In the proposal, the cops have identified a few roads near the station area, which they want to convert into
no-parking zones.
S A Quadri, assistant police commissioner for traffic, Navi Mumbai, said, "Traffic congestion in these areas create a lot of problems. To ensure smooth flow of vehicles, we have come up with this proposal. Parking on two stretchesu00a0-- from Vashi station to Vashi plaza, and from Centre One Mall to Raghuleela Mallu00a0-- will not be allowed. We have even approached the locals for the same, and are awaiting their objections and suggestions in writing."
Too strict?
Although most Navi Mumbaikars have welcomed the proposal, they have doubts over its strict implementation. Arun Bhise of Citizens Unity Forum, an NGO, feels that a complete ban on parking is ill advised. "In case we have some work near the station, we would have to park our vehicles at least a kilometre away. This is not a feasible option."
The traffic police are likely to issue notification of a 'no parking zone' near the railway station in the next few days. Once the notification is issued, police marshals would be constantly patrolling the area and crack down on offenders. Besides, these offenders would be subjected to heavy fines.
"Once the notification is issued, stringent action will be taken against those flouting the norms. Patrolling marshals would ensure that no vehicle is illegally parked. Offenders would be fined anywhere between Rs 200 to Rs 550," said Quadri.
