Councillor put in fake social service certificate to get nominated

The Central police in Ulhasnagar have booked Sanmukh Manwani alias Annu for submitting fake certificates to the Ulhasnagar Municipal Council to obtain the post of a councillor. The police have also booked the chairman and members of the Sai Baba Educational Trust (SBET), who allegedly issued the fake certificate to Manwani.

Late on Saturday night, the police registered an FIR against Annu Manwani, SBET chairman Sheetaldas Harchandani, SBET members Murali Makhija, Manohar Makhija and Suresh Harchandani under sections 420, 465, 467, 471, 171 (g), 409 and 34 of the IPC for forgery and cheating.

According to the police, Manwani, a well-known businessman, submitted a certificate to the Ulhasnagar Municipal Council stating that he was the secretary of SBET and had done a lot of work for deaf and dumb children. On April 9, 2012, members at a special general body meeting nominated him as councillor, on the basis of this certificate.

The matter came to light when the complainant Vasu Panjumal Kukreja obtained documents through the Right to Information (RTI) Act about SBET. He found that Manwani was never a member of the trust. It also emerged that Harchandani and other members illegally issued a certificate to him.

“I have enough documents to prove that Manwani was never a member of the trust. Harchandani issued him a fake certificate. All of them cheated the municipal council. I made several complaints to many authorities. After verifying the truth, the police registered an FIR against them,” said Kukreja.

“Once we get the police report we will take further action. We will see if he can be disqualified,” said Yuvraj Bhadane, spokesperson of the Ulhasnagar Municipal Council. “We have registered an FIR against Manwani and others. The matter is under investigation,” said Mahadev Pimpalkar, senior inspector, Central police station.

The other side
“I am aware about the FIR against me. The complainant Kukreja and Manwani have enmity with each other. So Kukreja registered the complaint,” said SBET chairman Sheetaldas Harchandani.

“I am not aware about the FIR against me. But I know that Manwani has been a member of our trust for a long time. There is rivalry between Kukreja and Manwani,” said Suresh Harchandani, SBET member and accused. Sanmukh Manwani was not available for comment.
