Countdown to December 25: Crawford Market's Christmas pundit
Wondering how to enjoy the upcoming festive weekend? From shopping for decorations to places to attend the midnight mass, Jane Borges tells you what to do from Christmas Eve until the night of December 25
Join the midnight mass
If you want to experience the true festive spirit, attend a midnight mass on Christmas Eve. The mass is the most important part of the Christmas tradition, and for good enough reason. With hour-long carol singing performances, followed by the service, where parishioners also enact the nativity scene, some churches take a lot of effort into making the festival a grand one. Here's where you should be going.
Where: Cathedral of the Holy Name, Holy Name High School ground, 5 Convent Street
When: 9.30 pm
Where: Don Bosco Church ground, Nathalal Parekh Marg, Matunga
When: 9.30 pm
For last-minute buys
It's December 24th, and you've hadn't had the time to do buy the festive knick-knacks and decorations for your Christmas tree, or even worse, the tree itself. Fret not! From town to the suburbs, Mumbai is loaded and chances are that you'd be shopping till you drop that last coin. For Christmas trees, we'd suggest visiting Abdul Rehman Street, near Crawford Market, which is already lined with a wide array of trees, even ones in white to give you that snowy feeling. For dresses and gowns, and matching stilettos, Bandra's Hill Road is the best bet.
Where: Hill Road, Bandra (West)/Abdul Rehman Street, Crawford Market
When: 11 AM onwards
View stars and cribs
There's a reason why Christian neighbourhoods expend so much energy into making and lighting up their community star. The Christmas Star represents the 'Star of Bethlehem' that revealed the birth of Jesus to the three Kings. In Mumbai, every second lane flashes a star during X'mas season. Step out of your home and take a stroll down some old Christian pockets and churches, and every star will guide you to the other.
Where: St. Francis Xavier's Street, Dabul, Thakurdwar/St Peter's Church, Hill Road, Bandra/ Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Orlem, Malad West
Plot a Christmas lunch
What's Christmas without a lavish meal with your loved ones! City restaurants are offering special brunches and luncheons, which you'd definitely not want to miss. From appetisers like crostinis, chargrilled prawns and pizzas, to traditional Christmas favourites like chicken ham roulade, smoked turkey fried rice and Goan pulao, there's a lot to dig into. For the perfect sweet ending, you could choose between the rum cake and Christmas pudding.
