At some point, you may have come across an ad that uses words to create an image. We're talking about ads that have the words 'extra cheese' actually melting over a burger, or an ad for 'cosy socks' represented using, well, socks. This type of design is called expressive typography. Simply put, it is onomatopoeia for your eyes. If you want to learn more about the subject, register for a workshop at Ecole intuit. Lab, a design institute in Prabhadevi. Communications designer Falguni Agarwal, who used to be a faculty member at the institute, will conduct the workshop. She frequently helms such sessions at advertising and digital agencies, for whom typography plays an important role.

The workshop will begin with a lesson in the basics of typography

"Expressive typography is about looking at words beyond their textual meaning. I'll be teaching you how to turn these words into compelling visuals. For instance, the word 'hot' written out simply won't be as impactful as when you incorporate fire as a visual element," explains Agarwal. She adds that you don't need to have any prior design experience to attend the workshop. "I will begin by getting into the basics of typography, and only then move on to the hands-on component. Anyone interested in typography can attend." Once you grasp the concept, you can apply expressive typography to design everything from logos to posters.
