How are books made? Where do stories come from? What comes first — the words or the pictures? These are just some of the questions kids will find answers to at Book Stories, a workshop to be held at the Dr Bhau Daji Lad Mumbai City Museum.

The session is being organised in association with Tara Books, and will be conducted by Dhwani Shah, who works as an illustrator and graphic designer with the publishing company. The workshop is open to kids aged between five and 13 years.

"We will begin with a video presentation, showing kids how books are made, and the people and processes involved from start to finish. There will also be an interactive session, where they can ask questions, and I will answer them," informs Shah, who has studied design at the Sir J J School of Applied Art, Mumbai, and National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad.

She adds that while publishing for kids, it's important to deviate from the regular flip-style book format you find everywhere. "We experiment a lot with our books. They open differently and are more fun to read as compared to regular books. We will also show children how they can make their storybooks using the techniques I will be teaching them," she says.

Shah has conducted such workshops in Chennai and Pune in the past, and shares that kids can make for amusing art students. "We try giving them a theme to get them started with their book, but at the end of the day, they do whatever they want. So, I've learned to not interfere in the process. They can pick their own theme and narrative. I'll guide them through the process," she adds.
