Pune: Two months after he was arrested for the murder of Rationalist Narendra Dabholkar, Dr Virendra Tawde has been named as the key conspirator in the chargesheet filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

In the chargesheet, CBI has claimed they have around six key prosecution witnesses, and from a former member of the Sanstha, whose statements have been recorded. The six prosecution witnesses are sweepers from Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), including one beggar, who heard the sound of the bullet and saw two people fleeing on a motorbike. Two bike-borne assailants had shot Dr Dabholkar on August 20, 2013. Tawde was arrested for the murder on June 10, this year. As per the chargesheet, a case has been registered against Tawde, absconding engineer Sarang Akolkar, Vinay Pawar and Sanjay Sudvilkar.

Ample evidence
A CBI official said, “We suspect the involvement of Sarang Akolkar as well as Vinay Pawar, since he is good at logistical support for the Sanstha’s ‘disruptive’ activities. He was allegedly skilled in doing the groundwork prior to operations and covering up the tracks after their completion.”

He added, “We have ample documentary evidence in written and oral form in which Dr Tawde’s involvement is depicted in this murder. We have recovered some documentary evidence from Dr Tawde and some information from Sarang’s house. The spot where Dr Dabolkar was gunned down is just a kilometre away from Sarang’s house.”

Son says
Dr Dabholkar’s son Hamid said, “Finally after three years, the investigation has sped up and a chargesheet has been filed in time. Had it been filed a week later, Dr Tawde would have got grounds for bail. I appeal to National Investigation Agency (NIA) and CBI to work together and arrest Pawar and Sarang.”
