Denied alcohol, man leaps from 2nd floor of MLA hostel
Malegaon resident was in Mumbai to mark Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar's death anniversary and was unable to get a drink for past two days; after family refused to give in to his demand, he jumped
Denied alcohol by his relatives, a 33-year-old taxi driver attempted suicide yesterday by jumping from the second floor of the MLA Hostel in Churchgate. Malegaon resident Shankar Vasake was visiting the city along with his sister and brother-in-law on the occasion of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar’s death anniversary, and had arrived here on Tuesday.
According to family members, Vasake who has a long-standing drinking problem hadn’t had a drink for two days, and was desperate to lay his hands on a bottle of liquor. After they refused to give in to his demand, he decided to leap from the building. Vasake, who sustained injuries to his hands, was rushed to Gokuldas Tejpal Hospital where he was administered medical treatment. After staying at the hospital for a few hours, he along with his family members left for their native place later in the evening.
A social worker and family friend had taken the family to the hostel to freshen up after they had stayed for two nights at Shivaji Park. “We were allotted a room at the hostel, and after checking in, we were freshening up to proceed towards Chaityabhoomi near Shivaji Park in Dadar. A few minutes later, the incident occurred,” said Vasake’s sister Manju Mandade.
“Vasake is addicted to alcohol, and he didn’t consume any for two days. Being new to the city, he could not arrange for the liquor because of which he got frustrated and jumped from the building,” Mandade said.
Senior police inspector Zunjarrao Gharal from Marine Drive police station, however, said, “Vasake experiences alcohol pangs and his body shakes involuntarily as a form of reaction to the alcohol dependence. Since his relatives didn’t allow him to consume alcohol, he was in a hurry to buy a bottle, and he fell from the second floor staircase of the Niwas.”
