Mazagaon side rides on striker's brace to clinch easy 4-0 win over St Joseph's

Denzel Colaco’s brace helped St Mary’s ICSE, Mazagaon register a comfortable 4-0 win over St Joseph’s, Wadala in a U-16 Mumbai Schools Sports Association (MSSA) Div II match at Azad Maidan yesterday.

Tanay Shah opened the scoring in the 19th minute with a brilliant solo effort. Striker Denzel (14) then extended the Mazagaon side’s lead in the 30th minute.
Aayush Shetty scored a penalty in the 35th minute.

However, St Mary’s weren’t done yet, and in the 39th minute, Denzel scored the winner. St Mary’s were relegated to Division II in 2009 but their coach Balmukund Tiwary hopes they will be able to fight their way back into the top division by the end of this season.

“Last year we came close to getting promoted but finished third in Div II. But if we play the way we are doing right now, I feel we will be able to break into the Elite Division. Denzel is a very skillful player and he was the player of the day for us,” said Tiwari.

It is his first year in the U-16 side, but Denzel is confident that the team is good and they can do well. “Our school has good players but they just don’t concentrate on playing football. We have been in Div II for some years now. “But this time the boys want to win the title and get the team to where they belong — the Elite Division,” said Denzel.

He sought admission to St Mary’s from St Peter’s (Mazgaon) four years ago to improve his footballing skills and that seems to be paying dividends.

“I switched to Mary’s so that I could play football. From being just a team member at Peter’s to being the main striker of this team gives me a lot of pride. “I feel that being skillful pays more than being tall or well-built,” said the Neymar fan.
