Devendro's medal hopes die
India's L Devendro Singh put up strong fight against seasoned campaigner Paddy Barnes of Ireland in the quarter-finals of the light flyweight (49 kg) last night at the Olympics here, but failed to emerge victorious
Devendro’s 18-23 defeat to the Irishman ended India’s boxing campaign at the Games with woman boxer MC Mary Kom emerging the lone medal winner with a bronze. Devendro began Round One with a flurry of punches, but it was Beijing bronze medalist Barnes, who won the round 7-5.

The second round saw Devendro come out aggressively again, but a silly head-butt resulted in a two-point penalty against the Indian. Barnes took advantage of this and won the round 10-5.
The Indian came out all guns blazing and won Round Three 8-6, but it was too little, too late as his medal hopes were already crushed.
