Another day in the city and good has triumphed over darkness. A day after mid-day highlighted how DHFL chief Kapil Wadhwan was brazenly breaking the law by using blacked-out windows and a fancy number plate on his SUV, the housing finance baron has removed both illegal alterations.

On Monday, this paper had highlighted how an off-duty cop happened to see Wadhwan’s Range Rover driving past Worli Seaface and quickly took a picture of the heavily tinted windows and the fancy number plate on vehicle, before lodging an official complaint. For a week, Wadhwan didn’t seem to be cooperating with the police. The police asked him to be present at the police station to pay the fine and remove the tinted windows, but neither he nor his car were turned up, forcing the police to send the case to court.

Senior inspector of the Worli police station Vinay Kulkarni said, “The owner of the black Range Rover PY01-CK-0007 removed the tinted glass and the fancy number plate on Tuesday. The owner has been served a summons, asking him to be present in court on October 15 to pay the fine.”

A senior cop told mid-day that the concerned Regional Transport Office (RTO) would also take action against Wadhwan, who had not taken the required permission for the tinted windows or for using a vehicle registered from another state. In 2012, the Supreme Court had banned the use of tinted glass in cars unless the owner got permission from the concerned authorities. This order came after a series of crimes, including rape and molestation, inside cars with blacked-out windows.
