Incidents of attention diversion followed by theft are on the rise in the city despite attempts by the police to curb the menace. The latest such incident came to the notice of the cops on Sunday when Jitendranath, the personal assistant to the State Human Rights Commission, lodged a complaint of theft with the Ashok Nagar police. Jitendranath lost his laptop bag to diversion theft on June 17.


Another such incident occurred in October when Captain Vijendra who was visiting Indian Overseas Bank on Residency road lost his laptop after the thieves manage to divert his driver's attention.





The driver informed him that some unidentified men had diverted his attention by dumping some currency notes under the car. While the driver's attention was diverted, some members of the gang made away with the laptop bag kept at the back of his car.

According to the police, a Tamil Nadu-based gang operating in and around the city's busy commercial areas is behind the thefts.u00a0 Efforts are on to nab the gang that strikes in different neighbourhoods and constantly changes its area of operations to evade intensive police intensify patrolling that follows their strikes.

Inspector Radha Krishna of the Ashok Nagar police said a case of theft has been registered. "We are investigating the case," said Krishna.

Despite repeated attempts Jitendranath remained unavailable for comment.
