Do you want to date an IITian?

The students from IIT Kharagpur are looking to play cupid for their lonely classmates with a new online dating website that helps them flirt with girls from colleges across the country

So you are stuck attending your mechanical engineering lectures for the better half of the day and the girls in your class are more interested in quantum physics than you. You need to brush up on your pick-up lines and you are tired of hugging your pillow. If you ended up nodding in agreement while empathising with the situation, then dateIITians might be the brainchild that will rescue your love life from doom.

Layak Singh, a B Tech graduate in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Kharagpur, along with his classmates decided to start dateIITians.com after conducting a small, methodical market survey. "We went to malls and other hangouts in Kolkata to ask people if they would be interested in signing up to a website with IIT, IIM and NIT students, we consulted our classmates asking them why they felt they weren't able to mingle with young people. We finally approached local entrepreneurs, who said it was a viable social networking initiative," says Layak.u00a0

Reasons like the skewed ratio of men to women at the campus and the remote location from cities came up, so Layak and his team decided to find a solution. They are now in the business of matchmaking via the social networking site. Anyone from any college across the nation can apply and all applications are verified before you can start an active profile. Replace the blue masthead with red, add some floating hearts and the site looks strikingly similar to Facebook with a chat option, a homepage with news about your friend's hook-ups and a profile page that tracks your flirtatious endeavours.

The site already boasts 5,000 active users and 2,00,000 views per day since it went live in January this year.
You can choose to flirt with anyone from your 'buddy' list and use their tried-and-tested pick-up lines. 'You may not be Mr Right, but I am willing to take a chance with Mr Right Now!' and 'If I tell you I love you, can I keep you forever?' may not get you a date but it could lead to an intervention about your obsession for Mills & Boons novels and ultimately it's just about starting up a conversation.

You can also use their special Valentine's Day application that matches partner preferences with your friends. Choose from categories like religion, diet, hometown and build. Is it wrong to date a vegetarian? The section threw us off since it seems more appropriate in a matrimonial site but what dateIITians essentially lacks is a casual, fun attitude. The edges are rough and while we are certain the class toppers at IIT are ignoring their trigonometry homework to find the secret formula for love, the social networking site is definitely a good start.

IITians teach you pick up lines
>> I give my smile to everyone. But I think, to you, I give my heart.

>> You may not be Mr Right, but I am willing to take a chance with Mr Right Now!

>> You are the first person who has been able to make my heart beat slower and faster at the same time.

>> Do you believe in love at first sight, or should I pass by again?

>> I believe you can know more about a man from a kiss than from an hour of conversation. I pick the faster version, you?
