Failure on the part of the BBMP's Animal Husbandry Department to carry out its duties, has yet again exposed its apathetic attitude towards controlling the menace of stray canines. The civic body failed to take immediate action after a street dog mauled eight persons yesterday.

The dog is suspected to have been rabid, and it terrorised residents for four hours in Peenya Dasarahalli, before an agitated mob chased it and hacked it to death.
According to residents, despite making over 35 calls to BBMP local corporator M Munniswamy, they got no response. However, hours after the residents had dealt with the situation themselves and the eight victims were hospitalised, the local corporator decided to make an appearance.
On reaching the spot, Munniswamy claimed that he had avoided taking the calls because he assumed they were going to question him about the poor water supply in the area. He was further shocked to see Mayor R Sharadamma at the spot.
"I did not know that it was such a big incident and did not pick up calls because I thought they would complain about the water supply in the area. Since eight of my area residents have been bitten, I announce compensation of Rs 5,000 for each victim," he said.
Out of the eight residents, four were children aged between 3 and 7 years. Shivkumar (5) was bitten on his right arm, while Manjunath, 3, was bitten on his left cheek. Other victims also suffered serious injuries, but these two kids have been admitted at Victoria Hospital.
On being questioned, the Animal Husbandry Department retorted, saying that although they had information about this, they wouldn't have killed the dog. "We agree that the residents were agitated and because eight of them were bitten they killed the dog. We put a stray dog to sleep only if it tests positive for rabies.

We have now sent the carcass to the Veterinary College at Hebbal for Autopsy," said Parvez Ahmed Piran, joint director, Animal Husbandry Department, BBMP.
Incidentally, the BBMP had carried out a massive vaccinating programme at all the wards across the city last month. They had managed to round up 180 stray dogs from this particular ward. However, the department will now investigate whether and how this particular animal got past the vaccination drive.
