Dogged response

Couple who duped engineer of Rs 35 lakh had their ferocious dog attack him and the cops when they were being arrested

They say a dog is man's best friend, even if the man is a con artist. A couple from Andheri, who allegedly swindled a man of Rs 35 lakh, had their dog attack him whenever he came to their house to discuss the matter.
The dog even attacked the cops when they came to arrest the swindlers.

Deal gone wrong

In 2005, Razak Katodia (51) and his wife Zarina (58) allegedly sold the Baredawadi Compound in Andheri's D N Nagar to Afzul Rehman Ansari, an engineer for Rs 35 lakh. Said Shamsher Khan Pathan, senior inspector, Pydhonie police station, "They created fake documents and sold the property to Ansari. They paid Rs 10 lakh to the landlord of the compound." The Baredawadi Compound is worth almost Rs 3 crore today.

When Ansari realised he had been duped, he went to talk to the Katodias and demand his money back. But every time he went to meet them, the couple would set their dog on him. Fed up, Ansari filed a police complaint on January 1, this year. When the police went to the flat to act on Ansari's complaint, the couple set their dog on them too. "The dog was 10 dogs rolled into one," said Pathan.

Not first-timers

Finally, cops from Pydhonie and D N Nagar police stations combined forces, overpowered the dog and arrested the couple on Saturday. The Katodias confessed to having duped Ansari and promised to try to pay back the money. According to the investigating officers, this was not the first time they had swindled someone. In fact, they have confessed to another crime where they duped their victim of Rs 18 lakh.

The police are surprised that the couple managed to forge documents so accurately. "The woman has studied till Std IV and her husband till Std VII, but their work seems to be very professional," said an officer from Pydhonie police station. Incidentally, their son Anil Razak Katodia (25) is a civil lawyer.

New twist

While the Katodias have confessed that they paid Rs 10 lakh to the landlord of Baredawadi as his share in the deal, the landlord has told the police that he was not aware of any such deal or of Ansari's involvement in it. He has not been arrested.

Meanwhile, the couple's dog is now paying the price for his loyalty. While the couple will be in custody till June 5 in Pydonie police station, their dog has been lodged in the compound of the D N Nagar police station.
