A bit of fragility

Ahead of the May 17 release of his album, Room Under The Stairs, singer-songwriter Zayn has teased fans with his second single, Alienated, which he says “set the tone for the entire album”. “It shaped the way I approached my  [renditions], the styling of the guitars, and the sonic direction. This album comes from a place of vulnerability. I wanted each song to feel like it was being sung by me while I was sitting beside the listener, and telling them how I felt. It is raw.” The musician, who shot to fame as a member of the band, One Direction, joined hands with Grammy-winning producer Dave Cobb to present this album. “His ability to elevate music is second to none. This album [was created] at a time when I was staying away from things, and living with my own thoughts. It inspired me to write something from that space,” he says of the 15-track album.

Chris Brown

Sound check: Snap review of new music

For several ’90s kids who’ve grown up with an appetite for R&B music, controversial figure Chris Brown was often a staple on several playlists. Brown has, after all, delivered some hip-hop classics, like Forever, International love, and Sweet Caroline. And while his previous album, 11:11 was a successful release that even earned Brown a Grammy nomination this year, Go girlfriend from the album’s recently released deluxe edition is an offering that lacks the nuances of his hit offerings. It’s a perfectly peppy number that’s worth grooving to, but its lacklustre lyrics do little to contribute to the listening experience as a whole. Brown arguably delivers one of the weakest songs from the collection with this offering, however, the 13-track collection has many notable numbers that make the album worth paying attention to.  Today in music April 15,2015: Digital music revenues matched physical sales for the first time, thanks to growth in the streaming market. Pharrell Williams’s Happy was the most downloaded song in 2014

Still from The Greatest Hits

'The Greatest Hits' movie review: A charmless time-travelling pop-romance

Film: The Greatest HitsCast: Lucy Boynton, David Corenswet, Justin H. MinDirector: Ned BensonRating: 2/5Runtime: 94 min. The Greatest Hits is an unconventional time-travel movie - unconventional merely because time travel does not happen through any machine but by means of a transfer of consciousness.  ‘The Greatest Hits’ title itself suggests that this movie is basically a remix of bravura moments from various romcoms that have come before it. But that fact unfortunately, only adds to the deja-vu feel you experience here. Writer-director Ned Benson makes use of music to recreate those loving moments that Harriet (Lucy Boynton) experienced when her fiance Max ( David Corenswet) was alive. Max died in a car crash and Harriet was left grief-stricken. Specific tunes trigger Harriet’s launch back into her past. That’s probably taking the idea that music has an almost magical way of transporting us back to those lovey-dovey moments in our lives, way too far I guess. This one is a designated YA weepie and makes no bones about it. Harriet’s condition doesn’t allow her to move on. Though she worked in music and was mixing Max’s indie-rock album before his death, she now has to avoid all those songs like the plague. She now goes through life wearing noise-canceling headphones and curating playlists with only “safe” songs - songs that have no links to her past life. Set in rich Silver Lake neighborhoods of Los Angeles, Harriet lives a life that seems much beyond the means of her current profession of a librarian. Her four-year relationship with Max is broken down into song-specific moments and is on proud display near the mural on her wall.  When David (Justin H. Min), a potential suitor turns up at one of her grief support meetings, there’s a connection. Harriet and David have to bond with help from new music. That exercise in new romance feels forced. Benson works his premise around the idea that people remember the time and place of every song they’ve heard. That is next to impossible because no human memory can be that note perfect. We hear several songs, some repeat-worthy and some, not.  The eclectic mix of indie rock to instrumentals which purportedly mean a lot to Harriet, don’t leave much of an impact on the audience. The writer-director doesn’t make much of an effort to convince us of this high-concept premise. Lots of details are missed out in the romanticising of it all. Harriet can hear conversations even when her hearing is muffled and she continues to drive recklessly even though she just about survived a fatal crash. This shallow love story has little to recommend it other than some nostalgic rehashes. Even Harriet’s sonic-zoom into the past isn’t convincing. The performances are fairly convincing but the characterisations are flaky. The relationships between the grieving Harriet, the memory of her dead boyfriend Max and the new guy, doesn’t come alive. The scripting is rudimentary and the premise feels rather underdeveloped. The thinly drawn characters and the choice of music are what fails this experience. Most of the songs populating this narrative fail to rouse you from the drabness inherent in this charmless romance.

Perfect Days

'Perfect Days' review: Searching for Serenity in the beauty of everyday life

Film: Perfect DaysCast: Koji Yakusho, Arisa Nakano, Aoi Yamada, Tokio Emoto, Yumi Asou, Sayuri Ishikawa, Tomokazu Miura, Min TanakaDirector: Wim WendersRating: 4/5Runtime: 125 min. German-born director 78 year old Wim Wenders, draws inspiration from life in Japan, in this his latest cinematic offering. In “Perfect Days,” Wenders looks to the orderly, austere, yet culturally rich life of an older Tokyo resident. Through his lead character Hirayama (played by Koji Yakusho), he exposes us to the beauty of everyday life. A mild-mannered trim man with salt and pepper hair, Hirayama is content with his simple regulated life as a sanitation worker (cleaner of high-end public toilets in the fashionable Shibuya district of Tokyo) and outside of that he enjoys a passion for music, books, nature and photography. He gets up every morning in his modest apartment and drives a van to his workplace, playing his curated cassette collection. He wakes up early, puts his room to order, watches the sun come up and prepares to head to his work place with a minimal economy. He drives his car and enjoys songs that include “The House of the Rising Sun;” by The Animals, “Pale Blue Eyes” by The Velvet Underground, and “Sunny Afternoon,” by The Kinks. Lou Reed, The Rolling Stones, Otis Redding, Nina Simone also get a hearing. Hirayama glories in being mindful of every moment in his life. We only get to learn more about his past through a series of unexpected encounters. Wenders makes the entire exercise one of artful beauty. Hirayama’s world including the parks in which the designer toilets are situated, and a dark little bar-restaurant look pristine and beautiful. Even his halting communion with the female proprietor Mama (Sayuri Ishikawa) of the restaurant, comes across in empathetic fashion. Come nighttime, Hirayama reads and dreams in Black &White - sequences imagined in collaboration with Wenders’ wife Donata, a well-known photographer. It’s routine and some may say nothing much happens. Yet the sequences here converge into a deeply reflective portrait of a life well-lived in harmony with nature. Acceptance is the key here. For the audience it is acceptance of Hirayama’s way of life and for Hirayama it’s acceptance of his place in the hierarchies of the workplace. The public facilities he works in are distinctive and could pass off as a shrine. The underlying theme here is ‘Work is worship’ and comes through quite evocatively given that backdrop. Hirayama is not complacent. You will definitely be moved by the hard-fought serenity he brings to his life and work. Of course there’s some mystery behind Hirayama’s infinite patience while dealing with his teenage niece Niko(Arisa Nakano), and a brash colleague, Takashi (Tokio Emoto). It’s only when Hirayama’s estranged sister Keiko (Yumi Aso) shows up to claim her daughter, that we get an inkling of a somewhat turbulent past. Is Hirayama’s current life a way of making amends for that past? It’s been four decades after ‘Tokyo-Ga’ his documentary on Ozu and Wenders return to the Japanese capital is a reason to celebrate. This is one of his best narrative features and is richly aesthetic and brilliantly vivid in it’s delicate character study. The camerawork aids in shedding light on the lead character’s every move through a shimmering array of light and shadows. Crafted with utmost care and empathy, the deceptively simple narrative builds up on details of everyday existence that accumulate into a strongly affecting emotional wallop. This is a beguiling experience made richer by the remarkable contributions of its ace tech team. You need to see it to really experience this masterly veneration of Japanese Philosophy and culture.

Italian fashion designer Roberto Cavalli has passed away

Italian designer Roberto Cavalli passes away at 83 due to prolonged illness

Known for his flamboyant style, veteran Italian fashion designer Roberto Cavalli has passed away. He was 83. The famous fashion designer had been ill for a long time, leaving and entering the hospital more and more often for ritual checkups, his family told The Hollywood Reporter. Cavalli's company also issued a statement on social media, announcing the demise of Cavalli. "Roberto succeeded in becoming a globally recognised name loved and respected by all. Naturally talented and creative, Roberto believed that everyone can discover and nurture the artist within themselves," the post read. In 1970s, Roberto Cavalli became popular in the early 1970s for his animal prints. He imagined the women who wore his clothes as wild creatures: lionesses, panthers, and tigers, charming and wild. In the mid-1990s, Cavalli revolutionised the world of denim with a number of innovations, among them stretch jeans, which he invented by adding Lycra to the fabric, and a process for sand-blasting denim pieces that gave them a lived-in effect. The designer opened his first boutique in St. Tropez, France, the most exclusive vacation destination for VIPs, in 1972. As per CNN, Cavalli retired from active duty at his label in 2015, picking designer Peter Dundas to succeed him as creative director. Dundas left the job after only three seasons and was succeeded by Paul Surridge, who remained until 2019. In the same year, after a period of financial difficulties that led to bankruptcy, the business was acquired by a Dubai-based private investment firm, which has since retained the designer Fausto Puglisi for its fashion collections and further branched out into Cavalli-branded real estate and hospitality ventures. Cavalli's survivors include his longtime partner Sandra Bergman Nilsonn and his six children, Tommaso, Cristiana, Robert, Rachele, Daniele, and Giorgio. With his demise, he has left a huge void in the fashion industry. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Kirsten Dunst

Motherhood gains

Kirsten Dunst thinks that being a mother has made her a better actor. The Woodshock star, 41, who has sons Ennis, five, and James, two, with husband Jesse Piemons, and has been in Hollywood for over three decades, noticed on the set of her latest film, Civil War, that her craft has improved since having kids. “My [second] child turned one on this film, so I felt like I was really in it still. They make me better at what I do, for sure. I think once you become a mom, you’re just more fearless in life,” Dunst said during a US television show.  When asked if her world perspective changed after working on her latest drama, in which she plays a renowned war photojournalist, the actor admitted, “I’ve thought about that, way before this movie… It’s just naturally the anxieties of the time we’re living in!”  Dunst recently revealed persuading her husband to play the role of an unnamed soldier in a crucial scene in the Alex Garland-directed futuristic film. “It is not a role that he wanted to play. I kind of asked him to play it for us because he is such a brilliant actor,” she is quoted as saying. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Kourtney ‘pounded a glass of breast milk’ because she was feeling sick

Everybody has some or the other ‘ghar ka nuska’ to cure their illness. A few take honey, while others prefer orange juice, chicken soup, etc. But it seems like reality TV star Kourtney Kardashian is not ready to go for any conventional choice of home remedy to cure her sickness; rather, she has taken the idea a notch higher. It was just last night when Kourtney took to her Instagram stories and revealed that she ‘pounded’ breast milk as she wasn't feeling well, and this story has taken us by surprise. The actress, while dropping a selfie of herself from her bed, wrote, "I just pounded a glass of breast milk because I feel sick… goodnight!" Reality TV star Kourtney Kardashian Barker and her rocker husband Travis Barker got married in 2022.  The two welcomed their son on November 1 last year. Since then, the two have been enjoying their parenthood journey with their little one, Rocky. Kourtney and Barker, both have children from previous relationships. Kourtney is already a mother to boys Reign Aston and Mason Dash and daughter Penelope Scotland with ex-boyfriend Scott Disick. Barker, meanwhile, is the father to son Landon, daughter Alabama, and stepdaughter Atiana De La Hoya with ex-wife Shanna Moakler. The Blink-182 rocker had previously confirmed they planned to name their son Rocky Thirteen while discussing Kourtney's due date. "It's either Halloween or like the first week of November," he said on the One Life One Chance podcast. Barker said the name reminds him of Rocky George, the guitar player for the band Suicidal Tendencies, as well as the 1976 movie Rocky. Rocky is the thirteenth grandchild to join the larger Kardashian family, so the number thirteen is significant in his life as well. Khloe Kardashian mentioned it in a TikTok video during the baby shower. Kourtney has previously spoken about her medical emergency where she underwent an urgent fetal surgery. The caption read, "I will be forever grateful to my incredible doctors for saving our baby’s life. I am eternally grateful to my husband who rushed to my side from tour to be with me in the hospital and take care of me afterwards, my rock. And to my mom, thank you for holding my hand through this.
