Duo arrested for molesting female doctor in Kalyan

Bike-borne men follow doctor from her dispensary on Wednesday, pass lewd comments and make obscene gestures; locals rally to the rescue and thrash accused before handing them over to the police

Mahatma Phule police arrested two hotel management graduates on Wednesday night for molesting a female doctor in Kalyan. The accused, identified as Ravi Gokhale (25) and Amol Sonavane (29), are working with a hotel in Florida, USA, and were on leave. According to the police, the 25-year-old victim was on her way home around 10.30 pm on her Scooty after closing the dispensary located in Kalyan.

On the way, the accused started following her, passed lewd comments and began making obscene gestures. Fed up with their act, the lady stopped and asked the duo the reason for their actions, but the accused blocked her way with their bike and continued with their lewd comments and gestures. Annoyed, the doctor raised an alarm. Scared by her reaction, the accused tried to escape and entered a beer bar. However, a few passers-by who were alerted by the doctor’s shouts for help, followed, caught, and thrashed the duo before handing them over at the Bazar Peth police station.

Later, the matter was handed over to the Mahatma Phule police station, as the crime was committed in the area under their jurisdiction. “We arrested the accused under Sections 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint),” said Sunil Patil, senior inspector, Mahatma Phule police station. The accused were produced in court and released on bail yesterday.
