Eknath Shinde plans tunnel below Sanjay Gandhi National to solve traffic problem

PWD minister of state and MSRDC Chairman Eknath Shide on Friday said that in order to solve the traffic problem on the Ghodbunder Road a tunnel will be constructed below the Sanjay Gandhi National connecting Western Express Highway near Borivali and Ghodbunder Road

Thane: PWD minister of state and MSRDC Chairman Eknath Shide on Friday said that in order to solve the traffic problem on the Ghodbunder Road a tunnel will be constructed below the Sanjay Gandhi National connecting Western Express Highway near Borivali and Ghodbunder Road near Tikijiniwadi. The authorities claimed that the work will be done in such a manner that there is no hazard to the environment and forest.


According to Eknath Shide, " In order to solve the problem of traffic on the Thane Ghodbunder road we have decided to construct 10-15 km long tunnel pasding below SGNP. The work will be carried in such a manner that there is no hazard to the wildlife and environment. The tenders for the appointment of consultants for doing the feasibility study and preparing the Detailed Project Report has been invited."


The feasibility study and DPR will be ready in 9-12 months after which the project will be implemented. The project is expected to cost Rs 1500 crore and is expected to be ready in 2 years from the time the contract is awarded.


There will be a twin tunnel having three lanes on either sides and in case of accident there will be a exit that will be tgere in the median of the tunnel so that cars can be diverted via other tunnel. The authorities claim that there will be also proper ventilation in place to avoid any issue.

As a part of the feasibility study geotechnicalinvestigations will be done and the authorities claim that tunnel boaring machine technology will be used to construct tunnels and these machines cause very less vibrations.

In order to provide better ventilating vertical shafts will be taken and below tgere will also be fans and proper lighting system in place.

" We had discussed this plan with the MoEF Minister Prakash Javdekar during our recent meeting and he has liked the proposal and will be helping us in getting all the necessary permissions. The plan has also been discussed with the CM and his response has also been very positive." Added Shinde

The authorities also claimed that they might get financial help from the central government and MSRDC might even take help for getting funds from Japanese International Cooperation Agency depending on the financial model that would be selected to implement the project.

Authorities claim that on daily basis 67 thousand PCUs use the exciting Thane Ghodbunder Road and the tunnel will help in shifting the same traffic via the tunnel that would be constructed.
