Two four-wheelers and a bicycle were also hit by the tanker before it stopped after colliding with a building. The deceased, identified as Lalita Ramchandran, was a resident of Pimpri. Chatushrungi police have arrested the tanker driver Sudam Ambadas Kamble (35), a resident of Vidhate Vasti in Baner.

According to police, the victim had come to Baner a few days back to stay with her son. Around 2 pm, after shopping at the mall, she was crossing the road along with her husband, when the mishap occurred.

After the accident, the tanker driver had a verbal spat with the deceased’s husband and was nabbed by some people and then handed over to the police. Some passers-by said that the culprit was driving the vehicle in an inebriated condition. However, cops have denied this.

Assistant inspector MN Walekar, who is investigating the case, said that the driver lost control after the tyre burst and this led to the accident.

“The driver was not drunk. We have arrested him for rash, negligent driving and causing death due to negligence under the Indian Penal Code, and other relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act,” said Walekar.

“He will be produced in court on Tuesday,” he added.u00a0
