End of autocracy?

Government refuses to cave in to the demands of striking autowallahs. Promises to cancel permits of striking drivers from today

The Delhi government is not giving in. Even as autowallahs threatened to extend their two-day strike, the government said it's not ready to succumb to their pressure tactics. Transport Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely said, "The government will not bow down to their autocracy and will not allow them to harass commuters. Auto drivers will have to follow rules; otherwise their permits will be cancelled."

Plan of action

The Delhi Transport Department has formed 25 teams to zero in on autorickshaw drivers who don't start operating from today. The team will monitor the situation at important locations across the city. "The government will cancel the permits of three-wheeler drivers who are on strike. The government has received 23,000 applications for fresh auto permits in the city," Lovely said.

The city government also plans to introduce the biometric system to detect lapses in an autorickshaw driver's licence and identity card. "The new biometric system will issue licences to auto drivers and help identify a driver in case a complaint is filed against him. Their addresses will be verified as well," added Lovely.

Fair fare

Lovely also promised to streamline auto fares.u00a0 "We'll make sure autos charge according to the meter. The helpline where commuters can register complains will be restarted within a week," said Lovely.

Around 55,000 autorickshaws in the Capital called for a two-day strike on Monday, to protest against the government's alleged 'unfair'u00a0 crackdown on autodrivers operating without permits, licences and pollution control certificates.
