In order to play spin effectively, Jonathan Trott believes England batsmen need to get their fundamentals in place

After struggling against the Indian spinners in the first Test at Ahmedabad, England batsman Jonathan Trott is confident their batters will put up a better show in the second Test that begins at the Wankhede Stadium tomorrow.

India’s left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha claimed 9-165, while off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin grabbed four for 191 in the Motera Test. Trott, who considers Mumbai as the ‘heartbeat’ of India’s cricket, is determined to level the series before the Kolkata Test. “You don’t want to mull over these things. You want to get back to the game and get back into the middle and crack on. Hopefully travelling to Kolkata 1-1 will be great. It will be a huge challenge, but this team has got used to such challenges in the last couple of years,” said Trott after England’s practice session yesterday.

Trott, who scored a nought and 17 in the two innings of the first Test, said England’s batsmen must get their basics right to play spin well. “I still think we are improving (as far as playing spin is concerned). It gets highlighted because generally here you face spinners and they are going to take a lot more wickets. It’s an emphasis of trusting your game and producing results.

Bat like Cook
“We saw Cookie (captain Alastair Cook) the way he set up his game against spinners, it is effective. You don’t have to play in a certain way. You just have to just get the basics right and as long as you do that well and succeed, no one really worries how you do it,” said Trott, who wasn’t impressive with his bat before the series too apart from a half-century in the first warm-up game against India ‘A’ at CCI. “To adjust for us is a challenge but we have players who can do that. So, there is no reason why we can’t,” he signed off.
