Ex-Pune jockey ends life in Benares

BR Kaustubh, a former jockey who later took up an assistant trainer’s license at the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC), committed suicide in Benares, UP on Monday. He was 45.

Born in 1972, Kaustubh was granted jockeys’ licence by RWITC in 1995, when he was 23. As jockey, he rode mainly for trainer Hormuz Antia.

During an uneventful riding career, he rode only 14 winners in six years before finally hanging up his boots in March 2001. More than a year later, he took assistantu007f trainer’s licence and started working under the same trainer (Antia) until his suicide.
One of his colleagues, on condition of anonymity, told mid-day that Kaustubh was severely depressed due to huge loans that he had incurred, and that may be the reason he ended his life.
