The festival of lights is incomplete without illumination, be it from diyas, lamps or lanterns. However, if you are game for some innovation, check out Varsha Arya's handmade tissue fairy lights that can magically light up the dullest of interiors.

"The USP of these lights is their versatility and flexibility of use. They can be strung over mirrors, bunched into a bouquet, hung on the windows, kept in a jar or placed inside a basket; the options are endless. They completely change the look of your home," says Varsha.

She stumbled upon the idea in 2005 when she was experimenting with her Diwali home decor. It soon became a hit with friends and acquaintances and orders have been pouring in since then. Two assistants help her to create these dainty lights.

The process involves cutting and shaping synthetic tissue to make flowers. Colourful glitter is applied to the edges of the flowers and they are left to dry in the sun. Consequently, the flowers are stitched together with light bulbs using silver and gold coloured threads.

"Each string has nearly 100 floral lights and takes at least half a day to make. We also customise the lights based on the shades chosen by the customer," she says, adding that initially she had reservations about certain colour combinations until she realised that they look beautiful in every colour.
