Reserve Bank detects 178 counterfeit bills of different denominations

A police officer said that the fake notes have been sent to Bank Note Press in Devas in Madhya Pradesh and a case has been registered in this regard. The officer stated that the fake notes were deposited in RBI by other banks in the month of June.
u00a0"The notes are of fine quality and so RBI's customer banks could not detect it. Earlier the bank used to inform the police once or twice a year about such fake notes. But after the new guidelines of the Supreme Court were introduced, banks have to report to us each month about counterfeit currency," said the officer.
This year the RBI has reportedly detected fake notes worth Rs 2 lakh. Police said that the counterfeit currency mafias are thriving in the Capital who are printing notes of good quality which the banks fail to detect.
"Some are Rs 20 notes which can be easily circulated in local markets. Customers deposit the fake notes in their bank accounts, while the bank later deposits them in the RBI coffers," added the officer.

Three men allegedly circulating counterfeit currency notes were arrested from a park at Sarai Kale Khan in south west Delhi on July 29, 2010. The police claimed to have seized Rs 52,960 in fake notes from them.
The accused were identified as Surender Singh, Shiv Kumar Giri and Jai Prakash, all residents of Ghaziabad. During interrogation, they purportedly disclosed that Surender used to distribute the notes to his clients at railway stations and bus terminals in the NCR.
