Feisty and fashionable!

What's it about: Rebecca Bloomwood (Isla Fisher) loves to shop. But then, so does every other girl alive. But what sets Rebecca aside from the others is that she's an extreme shopaholic who's in denial of her addiction.

Despite rolling in thousands of dollars' debt in credit cards, spent buying Prada, Jimmy Choo, Gucci, almost everything that spells bling!, Rebecca wants more. Her motto in life is simple, shop till you drop, and then jump to your feet and shop some more.

Things get serious when she loses her job at her gardening magazine. It's not the loss of job that haunts her, but the lack of money to pay off her bills that makes her take up a position at a finance periodical where she bumps into Hugh Dancy, who plays her boss.

Rebecca becomes an overnight sensation when her column under the pen name 'the girl in the green scarf' becomes a rage. Fighting between coming clean with her mountain of debt to living the glamorous yet fake life of a fashion columnist, Rebecca struggles to match her own pace.

What's hot: Set in New York, the movie also mirrors the contemporary habits, traits and quirks of today's working-women. With dazzling mannequins exhibiting the latest couture and fashion trends, it's hard for a girl to not give in to temptation.

Despite living in a world plagued by recession, Rebecca has no qualms in using four different credit cards in adding up the bill for a single green scarf. Her character is goofy, an oddball of sorts, yet there's a glint of earnest desire to come clean on her mountain of debt and start afresh.

Isla Fisher does a brilliant job in playing Rebecca, using facial expressions, body language and loads of attitude to add spice to her character. Hugh Dancy is sincere and his casting is a whiff of fresh air, making him instantly likeable.

The soundtrack is as fashionable as the movie with Amy Winehouse, Lady Ga Ga and other artistes contributing tracks that provide the perfect score. Kristin Scott Thomas deserves a special shoutout for pulling off a Meryl Streep as the snobbish French editor of a high society fashion magazine.

What's not: There are elements of Devil Wears Prada, Sex and the City and even a whiff of Bridget Jones' Diary in the movie. Even though it's fun, colourful and doesn't take itself too seriously, the film gets stuck at places where it doesn't know whether it wants to be an outright non-brainer or give sermons on saving and being thrifty.

What to do: Feisty and fierce as the clothes Rebecca wears in the movie, Confessions Of A Shopaholic will appeal more to the girls than the guys. But with a tight script, a catchy score and decent performances, the film will cast its spell on anyone who loves shopping and thinks it's a sin!
