Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson was delighted with Wayne Rooney's performance during Tuesday night's 2-0 victory over Otelul Galati in their Champions League Group C clash in Bucharest. The 25-year-old became the highest-scoring English player in Champions League history after his brace from the penalty spot, taking his career tally to 26 goals in the competition. Rooney moves past former teammate Paul Scholes (24) in the standings.

"Rooney played more in midfield, the first (half) but he played further up the field which created a problem for them, particularly with the example of the first goal in which he got in behind them, it was probably the first time we got in behind them and got the penalty kick," he said. "He had composure and took his penalties well."

United were brought down to ten men after Nemanja Vidic was shown a straight red for a lunge on Gabriel Giurgiu after the first goal. The result takes Unitedu00a0 up to second behind Benfica, after an erratic group stage so far.

England's top scorer still has some catching up to do inorder to get close to the leading scorers in the Champions League. Raul (71) continues to lead the way while Ruud van Nistelrooy (56) sits second and Thierry Henry (51) is the only other player to have reached the half-century mark.
