Fewer dates next year leads to wedding rush

With Feb-March blacklisted as exam season, and unfavourable planetary positions in April-June, only a handful auspicious mahurats are available in 2012, forcing couples to tie the knot between November 7 and December 24

Keep your best outfits and jewellery ready, as there is every possibility that you would be attending a slew of weddings this marriage season. Soon-to-be married couples and their families have decided to make the most of this auspicious period as the following year has very few dates fit to tie the knot. And there is a mad rush as experts predict the only auspicious window for weddings is between November 7 and December 24.

Bhupendra Mehta, a priest who solemnises marriage vows, said, "Next year, there is a dearth of auspicious mahurats. From December 25, 2011 to January 16, 2012, there is not a single one. Moreover, the
adverse planetary positions will last from April 28 to June 5 as well."

According to Chandrashekhar Vyas, another priest, "Considering that vacations are on, most marriages are scheduled for April-end and May, so that every one can join and enjoy the celebrations. However, in the coming year, this period is completely blocked due to unfavourable positioning of the planets."

He added, "February and March are almost blacklisted by families, as it is exam time. Hence, those couples who don't want to wait that long, are rushing to get married between November 7 and December 24 this year."

Eager couples
Priyanka Ghatge, a would-be bride said, "We were informed by our family priest that there are only a handful of auspicious days in the coming year. Hence, we decided to tie the knot this year itself and are now zeroing in on a date in December."

Echoing Priyanka's views, Samhita Kulkarni said, "My fianc ufffd and I don't want to wait for the next year. So we convinced our families to go ahead with the wedding in December. However, we are worried about completing the preparations is such a short time span."

Trying to keep up
With their demand suddenly shooting up, priests are having a hard time keeping up with the requirement. To meet this shortfall, they are now roping in their acquaintances and counterparts from places like Nashik, Trambakeshwar and Shirdi.

Priest Sudesh Joshi said, "I have requested three priests from Nashik to join me, as I have too many weddings to solemnise this season. We want to ensure that every family is happy with the rituals we perform." His counterpart, Upendrabhai Mehta, said, "I have requested five priests from Shirdi to join me and my brother, as we can't manage so many weddings on our own. Moreover, we don't want to refuse our clients."
