FICA chief Tim May blames Pak cricket set-up for Haider issue

It sent down a shiver to the spine when Pakistan wicketkeeper Zulqarnain Haider recounted what he had been told by a shady middleman in Dubai seeking to fix matches: "If you work with us, we will give you a lot of money. If (not) you go back home, we will kill you and your family'," Haider told a BBC reporter yesterday.

Federation of International Cricketers' Association (FICA) CEO Tim May feels the issue could have been avoided if there was strong morale in Pakistan's dressing room. "It feels like the player is inclined towards trusting people in England, rather than his teammates or board officials," May said.

The former Australia off-spinner felt the incident could be a blessing in disguise. "It is a big issue of trust here, I feel for the player. For, he has given up his blossoming international career. But, in hindsight, this was needed to clean up the mess from cricket. "We met ASCU officials in the first week of October and gave them a few suggestions on how a player must report an approach (by bookies). Some suggestions were tabled and considered. We are hoping that they are implemented," he said.

"PCB need to get some order in place. We have known Pakistan teams of the past with a leader like Imran Khan, who ensured there was harmony and a lot of peace among players. Right now, they have new captains, administrators, coaches every two weeks or so. I am not surprised that someone like Zulqarnain was afraid to approach any of his teammates when this occurred in Dubai."
