In an unfortunate incident, a 13-year-old committed suicide by allegedly hanging herself at her Madanpura residence in Nagpada area on Thursday night.

Though the police are yet to reach the conclusion that the teenager took her own life, they suspect that financial crisis within the family could have driven her to take the drastic step.

The victim, Fatima Ansari, a resident of Kamati Chawl at 3rd Halabai estate, allegedly hanged herself with a dupatta at her residence while her father Shakil had gone to M H Saboo Siddique Hospital, where he was
undergoing cancer treatment.

"It was the neighbours who saw Fatima's body hanging from the ceiling as the door was open. They immediately informed the police," said Yogesh Pawar, sub-inspector, Nagpada police station.

Investigations revealed that after her mother's untimely demise, Fatima preferred staying away from her drunkard father. Since Shakil's wife was her maternal aunt, she started living with the Ansaris. Later, the Ansaris adopted her legally.

"She had been living with them for a year. Lately, the family was hard-pressed for cash, and whatever little they had was being spent on Shakil's treatment. Hence, we suspect that to reduce the family's burden, the girl committed suicide," said Pawar.
